These systems are primarily used on town water so after the sediment pre-filter, the most important filter should always be a Carbon Filter to protect the life of the membrane.  The carbon block cartridge will remove any larger components but more importantly, will stop chemicals from reaching the membrane. This should then prolong your membrane life (the membrane is your most expensive and crucial component) for a life of up to 5 years (depending on location/water.
